A 19th century example of a carved intaglio wax seal. So beautifully detailed and so gorgeously layered with meaning, this adorable antique delight pulls the heartstrings, I think. A Scottish piece dating to the mid 19th century and a lovely white chalcedony example. Painstakingly engraved with the words Dinna Forget, which means don’t forget or forget me not, atop a sweet spray of flowers. The flowers could be forget me nots or possibly roses. Dinna forget intaglio wax seals are predominantly found decorated with a Scottish thistle, so this piece is a little different.
The phrase can be found in a lovely early Victorian poem:
DINNA FORGET ME
The last time we roved through Lochaber’s dark glen,
When the red blooming heather wi’night dew was wet,
You ken, bonnie lass, what ye promised me then;
You canna forget love ! You canna forget !
You said when the harvest moon blink’d forth again,
When the Gowan’s gay hues and the simmer beans met,
That the Kirk and the good ring should make you my ain.
Dinna forget love ! Oh, dinna forget !
Ann now the sun glitters o’er braes, and through birk;
Though late in the gloaming his ray lingers yet:
Simmer is come, love; the ring and the kirk
Dinna forget, love, oh, dinna forget!
This piece is unmounted and would look amazing set as a pendant, ring or extender for example
